I love watching movies and playing online games, so a high-quality display dramatically matters to me. Although top-notch graphic cards help me get sharp graphics, I discovered that a high-quality 144hz monitor could provide a next-level experience. It is possible by reducing blurriness and making the animations smooth.
Luckily, my Windows OS-based laptop can run a 144hz monitor. Many newer laptops on the market can output 144hz to external monitors. I use the 144hz monitor instead of my laptop screen.

Can a 60hz or 120hz laptop Run a 144hz Monitor?
When I check my old 60hz laptop, I was curious, can a laptop run a 144hz monitor? I always wanted to bring my gaming experience to the next level, so I tried using this monitor.
Fortunately, I successfully connected my 60hz laptop to a 144hz monitor. Instead of using my laptop screen, I use the 144hz monitor.
Connecting my 60hz laptop to the monitor is easy since it has HDMI ports and a sound, graphic card. I disabled my laptop display and set the monitor as the primary display for the best performance.
A laptop does not have to drive the external monitor and its screen at the same rate. I also have a 120hz laptop, and I tried it with a 144hz monitor – it works! Although the laptop cannot drive the 144hz monitor at full rate, it still works at a lower rate.
How to Know if a Laptop Supports 144hz?
I will teach you the entire process. Before getting a 144hz monitor, it is best to know whether or not a laptop supports 144hz. I did that by checking my monitor setting.
First, you have to turn on the OSD to find it. If it has an option for 144hz, select and configure it. Lastly, check if Windows is set at the advertised refresh rate instead of a lower refresh rate, including 60hz.
How to Connect a Laptop to a 144hz Monitor
Since I am eager to get the 144hz monitor’s smooth visuals, I tried to connect the monitor to my laptop. Don’t worry; I will share with you how I did it and keep everything simple.
You will need the following materials:
- A DisplayPort adapter for laptops without a DisplayPort port
- An HDMI cable
- A 144hz monitor
After gathering everything, follow the three easy steps below:
Step 1: Plug the HDMI Cable
First, you must plug the HDMI cable into your laptop’s port.
Step 2: Plug the Other HDMI Cable End
Next, plug the other HDMI cable end into the 144hz monitor. After that, turn on the laptop and the 144hz monitor.
Step 3: Go to the Display Settings
On your laptop, go to the display settings. You have to ensure that the 144hz monitor is set as the primary display.
Alternatively, you can change the refresh rate on the monitor. Go to the Advanced Display Settings.
Does your laptop use an operating system other than Windows? If so, open the NVIDIA Control Panel. After that, do all the display changes.

What Different Types of Connectors Used for Connecting a Laptop to 144hz Monitor?
When connecting my laptop to a 144hz monitor, I use three types of connectors: DisplayPort, DVI, and HDMI.
A DisplayPort connector is new to the connectivity field. It often comes with an expensive gaming monitor for a high-end gaming experience. Not all monitors support this connector. You can find three DisplayPort types on the market.
- DisplayPort 1.2 – supports 4k videos at 60hz refresh rate
- DisplayPort 1.3 – supports 8k videos at a 30hz refresh rate
- DisplayPort 1.4 – supports 8k videos at a 60hz refresh rate
A DVI cable comes with 29 pins. It transfers analog and digital signals. It also offers excellent picture quality.
HDMI is the most common connector type for laptops. Since it only needs a single cable, it is the most straightforward connector. When connecting an HDMI cable, plug it into the HDMI port on your laptop and monitor.
This connector comes in different forms, including:
- HDMI Standard – used for 1080p resolution
- HDMI High Speed – used for 4k resolution
- HDMI Premium High Speed – used for HDR quality
- HDMI Ultra High Speed – used for 8k video quality
Why is 144hz Better for Gaming
If the refresh rate during a display is upper, I often get a higher experience. Remember that games usually employ plenty of computer power. Whenever I play massive games, I often experience tearing of the screen.
Monitors with a lower frame rate can affect the gaming visuals and performance. That is why I tried running a 144hz monitor on my laptop.
With the 144hz monitor, my laptop renders faster images due to quicker updates on the graphics. It helps obtain a better game-play experience and performance.
Another reason why I use this monitor with my laptop because it compliments 3ms or 5ms overdrive reaction time. As a result, motion blurs, trailing, and ghosting is minimized.
How to Increase Hz on the Laptop
When changing the refresh rate on a laptop, go to the Start button. Next, select Settings > System Display > Advanced Display Settings.
Search for the Refresh rate and select the preferred rate. Beware that the refresh rates will depend on the laptop display and what it supports.
Why Does a 144hz Monitor Only Show 60hz?
I experienced my 144hz monitor being capped at 60hz because I used an unsuitable DisplayPort or HDMI.
Remember that using the wrong cable can make your 144hz monitor only show 60hz. That is because the cable limits the monitor from running at more than 60hz. I resolved this issue by using a 144hz-compatible cable. I prefer the HDMI 2.0.
